| The Sun Java Enterprise System Instant Messenger client user Interface suffered from lack of compliance to standards, an outdated UI, and clumsy interaction models.The new version was rebranded to conform to the Java Look and Feel Design Guidelines. Results from a user survey, competitive analysis, and formal usability testing were all used to inform the design of the new UI. |

| The chat window was redesigned to conform with IM industry standards. A new set of icons were designed and background textures were introduced to give the interface a friendlier and less technical appearance. The placement of the controls was changed to improve usability, while the number of toolbar buttons was streamlined. |
